A US military specialist and his service dog have been reunited three months after being injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan in December.

Specialist Andrew Brown of the 89th Military Police Brigade and his military dog, Sergeant Rocky, received Purple Hearts after being wounded, but both were separated while being treated.

But this week the pair reunited in Bethesda, Maryland — and while his belly and tail are in shock, Rocky's love for his human war buddy is as strong as ever.

On ABC News at the party, Brown said, "I know, it's been a while!" he shouted. His former mate was excitedly baring his face and his tail was wagging in delight.

Brown was equally excited to be reunited with his teammates, telling ABC that he was "just excited — that's the only way I can describe it."
Ped was a partner for two years when Rocky identified an IED while searching a compound in Afghanistan.
As the pair moved away from the explosive device, the secondary device went off, injuring Rocky's tailbone, left leg and pelvis. SPC Brown was also injured requiring physiotherapy to enable him to walk again.
A photo of Rocky in his hospital bed with a Purple Heart — a medal awarded to those wounded or killed in action — was shared by the team on Facebook in December, garnering 151,000 likes and 206,000 shares.

The pair were initially adopted in the same hospital room, but later went separately to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington and the Sgt Rocky Dog Center in Germany.

In an interview with ABC in December, Brown said that Rocky deserves a lot of credit for his success in the industry.

"He does everything," Brown said. “I'm a really messed up guy. I bring him into the zone and do his thing. If he responds, I'll translate it...let them know my dog got a response here.
According to Star and District, Rocky underwent 4,000 hours of surgery, therapy and physical therapy in Germany and said a hero's goodbye before flying to the United States.
A hero dog costs a lot of money, but Army vet Len Hansen told the ABC he's worth it: "He's a military service dog, he's capable and comfortable and good at his job."
If it's decided it's best to retire Rocky, the tough old dog doesn't have to worry about where he's going: he's already made a home and waiting for him with the Brown family.
